Connect Res Ipsa to your AI assistant
Res Ipsa is a legal-research connector for New Zealand legal professionals. It lets an AI assistant you authorise — such as Claude, ChatGPT, or your firm’s Microsoft 365 Copilot — research the New Zealand case law and legislation we hold, plus England & Wales case law as persuasive comparative authority, and return results with links back to the source. It surfaces primary legal materials for a qualified professional to read and assess: it is not legal advice, and it does not predict outcomes.
What you can do with it
The connector exposes 11 read-only tools. New Zealand has the full judgment layer; England & Wales is semantic case-law search, surfaced as persuasive comparative authority for New Zealand research.
New Zealand
nz_search_case_law- Semantic search over NZ case law by topic, factual pattern, legal proposition, or authority theme.
nz_find_judgment_by_citation- Look up a specific NZ case by citation or party name.
nz_find_authorities_by_case_citation- Note-up: later cases that cite a case, and how they treated it.
nz_find_authorities_by_statute_reference- Cases that interpret a given statutory provision.
nz_search_legislation- Search NZ statutory provisions. By default, results come from legislation whose current official work-level status is In force.
nz_good_law- Whether a case is still good law — a database-bounded currency lead with a calibrated good-law signal, plus the later cases to confirm against.
nz_case_dossier- What the citation graph knows about a case (citer count, treatment, what it’s cited for) — held or not.
nz_rank_authorities- Rank a set of cases by legal authority (standing, citation velocity, trend, currency).
nz_cases_on_provision- Cases interpreting a statute provision, interpretation-first then by authority.
nz_leading_authority- Leading cases on a topic across three axes: foundational, recent on-point, and the current controlling case.
England & Wales — persuasive comparative authority for New Zealand research
englandwales_search_case_law- Semantic search over England & Wales case law for comparative research. Results are persuasive authority in New Zealand, never binding except for a Privy Council decision on a New Zealand appeal.
Every case result includes a deep link to the judgment on Res Ipsa; legislation results link to the canonical legislation.govt.nz page.

How to connect Res Ipsa to your AI assistant
Choose the assistant you already use. Claude and ChatGPT can be connected by an individual where their plan and firm settings permit it. Microsoft 365 Copilot is deployed by your firm’s administrator.
Interface paths last checked 26 July 2026.
Res Ipsa connector address
Enter this when your assistant asks for an MCP server or custom connector URL. There is no API key to manage.

ChatGPT
- In ChatGPT on the web, open Settings → Apps → Advanced Settings and enable Developer mode.
- Return to Settings → Apps and select Create.

Microsoft 365 Copilot
This is the Copilot used with Microsoft 365 in a law firm — not GitHub Copilot. An individual lawyer cannot add the connector URL directly. Your Microsoft 365 administrator must register and deploy Res Ipsa as a custom federated connector.
For lawyers
- Ask your Microsoft 365 administrator to deploy the Res Ipsa connector.
- Once your administrator confirms deployment, connect Res Ipsa from the connectors available in Microsoft 365 Copilot.
- Sign in with your own Res Ipsa account when prompted.
For Microsoft 365 administrators
- Contact [email protected] so we can coordinate the OAuth registration.
- In the Microsoft 365 admin centre, go to Copilot → Connectors → Gallery.
- Under Created by your org, add a custom connector using the Res Ipsa address and the agreed OAuth registration.
- Stage the rollout to a test group before deploying it to the firm.

Gemini
Google currently limits custom MCP apps to eligible Gemini Spark users aged 18 or over in the United States, using English and a personal Google Account. That makes this route unavailable to New Zealand legal professionals for now. We will update this guide when Google expands access.
Google’s current availability and setup guideAfter you connect
Try: “Using Res Ipsa, find New Zealand authorities on whether a contractual exclusion clause covers negligence, then note up the leading cases.”
When your assistant sends you to Res Ipsa, sign in and approve access. Authorisation uses OAuth 2.0: Res Ipsa does not receive your assistant password.
You’ll need an active Res Ipsa account. If you’re new, create an account, choose a subscription on the account page, then return to your assistant to connect. See pricing for the current plans. All Res Ipsa tools are read-only, and fair-use rate limits apply per account.
How your data is handled
Res Ipsa is built to hold as little of your information as possible:
- We do not store the content of your searches. Your query is processed in real time — including by a third-party embedding provider, under contract — to return results. Res Ipsa does not retain it.
- We keep access audit logs only — which account made a request, which tool was used, when, and whether it succeeded (plus coarse signals such as result count and response time) — for security, abuse-prevention, and billing. These do not contain your query text.
- We accept no document uploads, and we do not use your activity to train any indexing, embedding, or other machine-learning models.
Results are produced by automated indexing, search, and ranking over a corpus we hold — not by generating answers. Full details are in our Privacy Policy and Terms of Use. The Service is governed by New Zealand law.
Limits & good use
- Results are research, not legal advice. Verify against the primary source and apply your own professional judgment. Good-law verdicts are database-bounded leads, not rulings — absence of negative treatment in our database is not proof of currency.
- A legislation result’s In force label is the current status of the work as a whole. It is not proof that every provision has commenced or that the text applied at a past date.
- England & Wales case law is provided for comparative research as persuasive authority; it is not a complete record of UK case law, and the judgment layer (note-up, good-law, and authority ranking) does not run on it.
- The corpus is for ordinary research use; bulk extraction or scraping via the connector is not permitted (see the Terms).
